had a fair amount of sea service before being commissioned with the First Fleet as 2nd lieutenant of marines. He had married Martha Escott Johnson on 18 November 1784 and their children were born before he sailed aboard the Friendship. In 1790 William was sent to Norfolk Island and remained there until December 1791 when he returned to Port Jackson and then to England aboard Gorgon. On 18 April 1793 he was commission 1st lieutenant 76th Company and served on Royal Sovereign. He was promoted captain lieutenant in July 1797 and in the December went on Vanguard, where he served until his death in action at the Battle of the Nile on 1 August 1799.

Awarded Military Cross For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This officer fought throughout twelve days, commenced as accompany officer, when on one occasion he counter-attacked across the open with his company, killing and bayoneting a large number of the enemy and driving them back 600 yards. Later, when his C.O. became a casualty, he commanded the battalion with determination and skill. (London Gazette 16 September 1918)

Though his company was greatly reduced in numbers, he held his ground against strong enemy attacks with the greatest ability. He led a counter attack, drove back the enemy with heavy loss, and saved a serious situation. His resolute determination and courage were an inspiration to all. (London Gazette 18 July 1918)
